Jazirat Al Hamra

Jazirat Al Hamra is a pearling village on the Ras Al Khaimah coast whose residents left in the 1960s, and it was never demolished or rebuilt. Coral-block houses, a mosque and a market still stand — one of the very few places in the Gulf where a pre-oil town can be walked through rather than reconstructed.

What marks it out

  • Coral-block houses, roofless and still standing
  • The village mosque and the old market lanes
  • Best in the last hour of light, and not at all at midday

Getting there

Fifty minutes from Dubai on the coast road, signposted off the E11.
