Ajman city

Ajman is the smallest emirate by area, and its city is the closest thing the country has to a beach suburb of Dubai — under an hour up the coast at a materially lower room rate. The creek still has a dhow yard on it where hulls are built by eye, and the museum occupies an eighteenth-century fort.

What marks it out

  • Ajman Museum, in the fort that was the ruler's residence
  • The dhow yard on the creek, still building by hand
  • A long public beach with no ticket gate on it

Getting there

Forty minutes from Dubai outside the peak, and ten from Sharjah city.

The dhow builders of Ajman

One of the last working yards on the coast. Hulls are still shaped by eye and joined by hand, for owners across the Gulf.
