Dune Sunset Safari

Dubai · Sharjah desert

Trade the skyline for an ocean of apricot dunes — dune-bashing, sandboarding and a Bedouin-style camp under the stars.

The drive into the dunes

Forty minutes inland from Dubai the city ends abruptly — one moment you're on six-lane tarmac, the next the road is licked by sand and the horizon is nothing but red ridges. This is the Lahbab desert, where the dunes are softer and taller than anywhere within an hour of the city.

Your driver deflates the tyres at the edge of the sand, then the Land Cruiser dips over the first crest and the safari begins. Expect twenty minutes of carving up and down 40-metre dunes — a rollercoaster with a steering wheel — before the convoy pauses on a high ridge for the sunset.

Sunset on the ridge

Climb to the top of the dune barefoot. The wind has combed perfect ripples into the sand and within ten minutes the whole desert turns from gold to copper to violet. This is the photo everyone comes for.

If you booked the premium package, this is also where the falconry display happens — a Saker falcon launched against the last light, returning to the gauntlet for a piece of quail.

The camp

The camp is a low ring of majlis tents around an open fire and a buffet of grilled lamb, shawarma, mezze and fresh Arabic bread baked on a saj in front of you. Drinks are unlimited soft drinks, mint lemonade and Arabic coffee with dates; alcohol is available on the premium tier.

After dinner the show begins: a tanoura dancer spinning under fairy lights, a fire-poi performer, then a belly-dance set. The lights dim for stargazing — far enough from the city that the Milky Way is visible from October to March.
